My List of favorite Symbian OS applications
December 19, 2006 by Carlos Eduardo · 2 Comments

Windows Mobile users and Palm OS users have one major thing going for them: a large library of quality commercial software available for their devices. Symbian OS users, in spite of the raw numbers of devices out there, are still behind the times when it comes to having a library of software that isn’t ‘gimmicky’.
Part of the problem is that there have been so many changes to the OS, and there are so many different devices with different resolutions that perhaps developers are put off by the lack of focus on the development platform. An application for a UIQ device may not work on a Series 80 or a Series 60 device, for example. An a non-3rd edition Series 60 app isn’t necessarily going to work on newer devices. overall, just a pain.. for users and for developers.
However, there are those that stand out. Below is the list of the applications that I currently have and like:
QuickOffice – If you really want to punish yourself by looking at an Excel sheet on a small screen
A-Z Maps (For European Cities) – To navigate your way without GPS and without Data connection
Adobe Reader – To read PDFs
Zip Manager – To unzip zipped zips
Opera Mini (the ‘full size’ version is not free, and the mini version is excellent) – A Browser
Putty – An SSH client
Truphone (for those with WiFi devices) – A VoIP client
Tasky – A free task manager
Profimail - Email client, but a little buggy with Series 60 3rd edition devices
ScreenShot – Excellent and free screen capture application
EQO Mobile - A Skype/Yahoo/MSN etc. IM client
Four Elements – A fun ‘Dune/Civilization’ type game
SMS Planet – Free SMS & MMS sending (I haven’t tried it yet, but looks interesting. Requires client.)
However, there are many other applications out there that you may like that I didn’t. Here are some good lists for freeware/shareware sites:
