Treo 650 Headset Review:
04/02/2005
By: Carlos E.

The Treo 650 Headset was a purchase that I did not need. I was perfectly content
with my Motorola HS-850, but because of the Treo 650's crippled bluetooth
implementation, it only allowed my HS-850 to connect in Headset mode, whereupon
calls didn't automatically connect to my headset, only manually. So, since
I drive stick shift, I felt I should get the Treo headset to avoid button-pushing
headaches.
That said, the Treo headset is an un-exciting headset. Yes it does what it sets out to do. It has a decent battery life, industry standard by now (7 hours or so), the audio quality is ok, but not as good as that of the HS-850 (the Treo device itself doesn't have a great Bluetooth radio). The distance that I can travel away from the Treo is about on par with the HS-850.
Regarding the comfort, I can only rate this headset as average. I feel that the altough the earloop and weight of the headset is comfortable, it doesn't quite line up right to your ear, so you're never quite sure if it's in as close as you want it. Thus, volume is a sore point, the volume is not as loud as the HS-850 which I much prefer (when paired with other phones).
Laslty, the usability is average as well, the single button makes it easier to find the one button you use, but I tend to mess up the length of the push you need to do for certain actions. For example, when I want to shut it off, sometimes I let go too early and it redials the last number I called. Yes, no matter how good you are, you will most likely do this at least once with this kind of headset, that is why I much prefer the switchblade approach of the HS-850.
All in all, it's a recommended headset but only for the Treo. I'm still keeping my HS-850 just in case the guys at Palm decide they want to update their firmware to support it.
